What Is It Really Like to Become a Solicitor? Amanda Nicholson’s Journey in Law

Amanda Nicholson — Director, with Justine Sutton
Nobody hands you a job description when you first decide to go into law. The NJS Law Academy is our series of informal catch-ups between the directors, senior solicitors and junior solicitors at NJS Law, talking openly about their journeys in the law, the challenges they’ve faced, and what they’d want the next generation of solicitors to know. In Episode 1, host Justine Sutton sits down with fellow director Amanda Nicholson to look back at how she chose a career in law, the path from school to qualification, and how the reality of the job has changed over more than 20 years.

Why we made it

Most firms tell you what it is like to work there. Very few let you listen in while their own people talk about it.
Two people, two stages. Every episode pairs someone senior with someone earlier on, so the same question gets two honest answers.
The bits that are hard. Difficult cases, imposter syndrome, exams alongside a full-time job — not a recruitment reel.
Practical routes in. SQE, paralegal work, apprenticeships and career changes, described by people who took them.
Open to anyone. You do not need to be applying to us to get something out of it.

Justine Sutton

Director and Solicitor, NJS Law — series host

Justine spends a lot of her time thinking about the people coming into this profession: what they need, what nobody tells them, and how much they already have to offer. The Academy started as those conversations, recorded.

“Nobody arrives knowing how to do this job. We just stopped pretending otherwise.”

Thinking about where you start?

We take on paralegals, litigation executives and solicitors across personal injury, clinical negligence and dispute resolution — including people coming to law later, or from a non-legal first job.
